Basic Information
Regional Office of Public Health (hereinafter Regional Office) was established by the law of National Council of the Slovak Republic with the effect on the districts of Liptovský Mikuláš and Ružomberok. Regional Office is the successor of the State Health Institute repealed by the date of the establishing Regional Office of Public Health.
Regional Office is a health establishment for basic preventive disciplines - hygiene, epidemiology and occupational medicine. Its main tasks are health promotion and health protection, disease prevention and follow-up of environmental impact on the health status of the population.
Major Tasks
(with the effect on the districts of Liptovský Mikuláš and Ružomberok - North Slovakia)
- To assess occupational and environmental health risk factors and to present the neccessary suggestions for job categorisation, providing expert opinions on the health safety of various products, etc.
- To monitor and to study relationships between environmental conditions and health.
- To monitor selected occupational and environmental factors.
- To assess risks in the field of food safety and to communicate with the public.
- To cooperate in activities related to the operation and maintenace of public health information systems (Acute Respiratory Diseases, epidemiological situation of selected infections) and data evaluation.
- Cooperation with other state institutions, municipalities, non governmental organisations etc.
- To fulfil specialized tasks based on programme health promotion, and follow-up studies the health status of the population in the environmental and working conditions.
- In the field of health promotion and disease prevention Regional Office concentrates on the most important health problems - epidemiological surveillace of selected infections (hepatitis, food borne infections, meningococcal disease) promotion healthy life styles (prevention of cardiovascular diseases, healthy nutrition, drug abuse prevention).
- Health education of the general public through local media.
- Monitoring long term trends of infectious diseases incidence, occupational health hazards.
- To fulfil CINDI Programme (Countrywide Integrated Noncommunicable Diseases Intervention). The programm is designed to build effective approaches to primary prevention of heart diseases (CVD) in counceling center and to help people understand of risk factors for cardiovacsular disease, such as smoking, obesity and physical inactivity to the prevention of heart disease.
- Participate in regional projects (Healthy Cities, Health Promoting Schools, primary prevention in legal drugs, community-wide events etc.)
